Battery replacement on any of the Thomas toys is very simple. Initially, with a new toy, a screw needs to be loosened to allow the top of the train to be removed. The battery area is uncovered and the new battery can be placed into position.
It is a good idea to leave this screw off, thus allowing the older kids to replace the battery themselves. If the child playing with the toy is very young then you may wish to re- tighten the screw after replacing the battery.

Trackmaster Thomas Sets
The Track Master play sets are the best for young children. Each engine (there are over 100 different engines to choose from) is driven by a small battery contained within the body of the engine itself. The tiny motorized engine drives the trains on the track but the real beauty of the toys are that they will run across the floor without any track at all. T & Fs running on the Track Master style track in blue or grey will delight kids aged 3 and above. The engines are so easy to operate with a simple lever for ON-OFF control and a flick of the lever will set the car engine chugging away merrily by itself, or with carriages in tow.

There was also The Thin Controller but the fat man was better known to us kids. We did not find the term offensive at all, it was just a fact that this character was aptly, and amply, named.
