All things Thomas the train and friends!

Here's a look back on Thomas The Train.

A little history on where he came from.

Thomas the Tank Engine is a fictional steam locomotive in The Railway Series books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher. He became the most popular character in the series, and the accompanying television spin-off series, Thomas and Friends.
Thomas is a tank engine, painted blue with red lining, and displays the running number one. All of the locomotives in The Railway Series were based on prototypical engines; Thomas has origins in the E2 Class designed by Lawson Billinton in 1913.
Thomas first appeared in 1946 in the second book in the series, Thomas the Tank Engine, and was the focus of the four short stories contained within.
In 1979, the British writer/producer Britt Allcroft came across the books,[2] and arranged a deal to bring the stories to life as Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends (later simplified to Thomas and Friends). The programme became an award-winning hit around the world, with a vast range of spin-off commercial products.

Some more history on Thomas The tank Engine.

Learning Curve introduced some new designs for the track surface of wooden toy railways, such as the "clickety-clack" rails patented in 1995 and the newer tracks with a relief to supply better traction grip for battery powered engines, patented in 2002. They also introduced a road "track" on the flipside of the railway tracks.
The original models were constructed mainly from painted wood with metal used in the coupling magnets and axles and plastic wheels and faces. These models were relatively primitive, with simple wooden stubs for the funnel and dome and details such as windows, whistles and bufferbeams omitted.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the models were upgraded. The wooden funnel and painted smokebox were replaced with a separate plastic smokebox with a more realistic funnel. The tender engines received an additional upgrade of molded plastic coal.

These improved designs were manufactured until 2002, when they were replaced with a third generation of design, which included new and more detailed faces. Another update came in 2011 in the form of new faces to coincide with the recent CGI switchover.

Thomas and Friends

Merchandise.

Large numbers of manufacturers have sought to produce 'Thomas'-branded items due to the popularity and longevity of the series that originated in 1945 with the first of The Railway Series books by the Rev. W. Awdry.
The most popular and wide-ranging items of merchandise are, of course, the models of the characters, which have been produced in many different ranges, some including accompanying railway systems. However, there are many other popular products which include videos, books and magazines, and computer games. 'Thomas' merchandise has also included such diverse items as: audiobooks, annuals, colouring and activity books, jigsaws, board games, stationery, clothing, cutlery, household items such as curtains, duvet covers and lampshades, and soft drinks and spaghetti shapes.

...a little more history.

It was only due to the persistence of his wife, Margaret, that the Rev. Awdry eventually offered his scribbles to a publisher, and his first book, "The Three Railway Engines" was published by Edmund Ward in 1945. You could see the best Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway Trains product here .. At Christmas of that year, the Rev. Awdry made his son Christopher a simple wooden toy engine that was later christened "Thomas." And so Thomas the Tank Engine was born. At Christopher's urging, his father began to make up stories about Thomas too. "Thomas the Tank Engine" was published the following year and steamed onwards. The Rev. W. Awdry invented a fictional setting for the stories - the Island of Sodor - and wrote a new book every year until his twenty sixth and final story.

Thomas The Tank engine

and the history on how he made his television debut.

"Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends" chugged onto ITV television for the first time in Britain, in October 1984 and the series became an instant hit. Within just a few months, 8.5 million people were tuning in to watch. More people were watching Thomas than were viewing the popular sports programs on other channels. Children and adults alike were besotted by the little steam engine and adored the beautiful railway models in the series. The next stop for Thomas was America in 1989 when Thomas and his friends pulled into the PBS television station. Canada's YTV also took Thomas on board and the tank engine saw no signs of stopping there. Thomas puffed his way over to Japan in 1991, to Germany by 1997 and he has now appeared in 130 countries all around the world.
